Episkopi Gonia village is named after the famous church “Panagia Episkopi” the oldest church of Santorini island, a former bishop’s church built at the end of the 11th century from the Middle Byzantine period.
It is considered as the most important Byzantine monument of Santorini and it is likely to have been founded by the Emperor of Byzantium Alexio A’ Komnino (1081-1118) as a monastery’s main temple.
